Hong Kong’s art scene runs year-round, not just during Art Basel
A Foresight article based on a past ULTILAND AMA argues that Hong Kong’s place in Asia’s art world extends well beyond Art Basel in March. In the discussion, ULTILAND art project lead Hannah and co-founder Tangtang described the city’s strengths as a mix of geographic position, long-standing ties to both Chinese and international art networks, and a mature market structure built around galleries, collectors, auctions, media, education, and institutions.
They pointed to the West Kowloon Cultural District, M+, the Hong Kong Palace Museum, Tai Kwun, and PMQ as key stops for understanding how the city’s cultural identity has expanded from a trading hub into a broader creative ecosystem. The conversation also mapped out Hong Kong’s annual arts calendar, naming Art Basel, Art Central, Gallery Weekend Hong Kong, the Hong Kong Arts Festival, HKwalls, Art@Harbour, Fine Art Asia, Affordable Art Fair Hong Kong, Business of Design Week, and Design District Hong Kong.
The speakers said Hong Kong’s core value for younger artists lies in connection: linking creators with markets, collectors, curators, institutions, and international audiences. They also outlined ULTILAND’s interest in the city, including plans to explore artist submissions, online showcases, exchange activities, offline art projects, and a youth creator competition scheduled every three months.
